PROJECT TITLE: Pro-Nano Bioadhesive Systems for Treatment of Head and Neck Cancers
Applications are invited for a full-time bursary available in the Institute of Nanotechnology & Bioengineering. The bursary is tenable for up to 3 years for a PhD (via MPhil route) [subject to satisfactory progress] and is open to both Home, EU and International students. The bursary will cover the cost of tuition fees at the Home/EU rate. International students will be required to fund the difference between the Home/EU and International fee rate. The successful applicant will commence on 1 January 2013. Please note deferred starts from this date will not be permitted.
Liposomes are well-established nanocarriers in drug delivery and a number of anticancer liposome formulations are used clinically. Despite that, the instability of liposomes has retarded the development of many liposome-based products. Within our Institute of Nanotechnology and Bioengineering the research group have developed a range of stable bioadhesive nanosystems. Head and neck cancer is a common cause of death. One type is the oral cancers which are presented by an abnormal growth of cells of the tongue, lips and gums. Unfortunately, in complicated scenarios, this cancer might spread out to the tonsils, throat, salivary glands and lymph nodes. This project is based on development of novel bioadhesive nanosystems for topical application on oro-pharyngeal cancers. The ability of these formulations to kill cancer cells will be investigated in vitro using tissue culture and in vivo using a suitable animal model. The multidisciplinary expertise within the Institute of Nanotechnology and Bioengineering will facilitate the study.
In this project a range of techniques will be applied including:
1- Formulation of nanosystems using a range of technologies.
2- Size analysis using laser diffraction and photon correlation spectroscopy.
3- Particle surface charge analysis.
4- Performing encapsulation studies using HPLC.
5- In vitro analysis of the anticancer preparations using cancer cell lines.
6- Microscopic techniques.
7- In vivo studies on a model animal
This project is expected to generate patents and commercial IP for the University and supports the expansion of the Institute of Nanotechnology and Bioengineering into the fields of medicine and dentistry.
Applicants should have, or expect to receive a minimum of UK 2:1 honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject area.
